Lesbian and Bi-women Resource Center "Bilitis"

The idea to create an organization of the lesbians and bisexual women in Bulgaria finally came true in the summer of 2003. The organization that started as informal movement in 2001, was transformed into a legal entity and became member of ILGA (International Lesbian & Gay Association).

The organization does not have rights protection as its primary function.
Bilitis aims to support lesbian and bisexual women in their social, educational, cultural, domestic and professional realization. To create an environment in which women from this community can fully realize their individual qualities and abilities, and occupy a respectable position in society which is not infringed by their sexual orientation. Bilitis wants to stimulate women in Bulgarian society to live open and honest lives with their female partners, and to overcome internal and external barriers which obstruct the love of their lives. Bilitis works to raise the self-confidence of lesbian and bisexual women and stimulate their fullest integration in society which should not happen at the expense of compromising their sexual identity.
Bilitis also aims to represent in a realistic way lesbian and bisexual women in society, to overcome prejudice and common stereotypes which denigrate these women because of their sexual orientation. Bilitis aims to popularize the professional, cultural and scientific achievements of lesbian and bisexual women, and not only of women living in the capital, but also of women from all over the country. Bilitis will also counteract every sign of discrimination or rude treatment of lesbians and bisexual women. The organization will support women of all sexual orientations if the latter have been molested or subjected to injustice because of their gender.

The organization works presently only in Sofia, but aims to start local support groups all over Bulgaria in the near future. You can contact the organization at: bilitis@bg-lesbian.com.
